NHL Execs, Scouts to Assist with Spengler Roster Build

The United States Collegiate Selects hockey team has announced it is being assisted in the player selection process by a quartet of NHL club representatives. Chris Bourque, Jamie Herrington, Billy Ryan and Mark White have all provided valuable input into the process and those four will continue to provide guidance to the coaching staff and team management in providing input for the final 15 spots on the team that is headed to the 2025 Spengler Cup in December.

Bourque was named the Director of College Scouting for the Toronto Maple Leafs in October of 2023, following an 18-year professional hockey career. The son of Boston Bruins legend Ray Bourque, he was a four-time AHL All-Star. Making his NHL debut with the Washington Capitals in 2007, he finished his pro career with three seasons in the DEL, where played for EHC Munchen and ERC Ingolstadt.

The Director of Player Evaluation and an amateur scout for the Montreal Canadiens since 2022, Ryan played collegiately at the University of Maine from 2004-08. Prior to joining the Montreal staff, he spent eight years as an amateur scout for the Florida Panthers. His professional playing career included stops in the AHL, ECHL and the EIHL, where he won a championship with the Nottingham Panthers in 2010-11.

White has been the Director of College Free Agents and a pro scout for the Winnipeg Jets since 2015. He served as both an assistant coach and associate head coach in the NCAA hockey ranks for 10 years, including four years at Bentley University and six at Brown University. Playing collegiately at the University of New Hampshire, he helped the Wildcats to a pair of Frozen Four appearances, including a trip to the national title game in 1999.

The Director of NCAA Scouting for the New York Rangers since 2016, Herrington played four years at Dartmouth College where he was a two-time captain. Following a seven-year professional career, he spent three seasons coaching collegiately, before beginning his scouting career with the United States National Team Development Program from 2014-16.

So far, 10 players have been named to the USCS team, including: Penn State’s Charlie Cerrato, Aiden Fink and Mac Gadowsky, Cole Knuble and Danny Nelson from Notre Dame, Michigan’s T.J. Hughes, Jake Livanavage from North Dakota, Joey Muldowney of UConn, Eric Pohlkamp from Denver and Minnesota State’s Alex Tracy.

All returning First and Second-Team AHCA/CCM All-Americans received an automatic invitation to the team. The remainder of the roster, which will include representation from all six conferences, will be constructed by the USCS coaching staff and organizing committee, with guidance from the NHL scouts.

The United States Collegiate Selects will face Team Canada to open play Spengler Cup play on December 26. Each team will play a minimum of three contests and maximum of five during the six-day event.
