Women’s Notes: Delaware Crosses off First Program Win
Trio of Freshmen Lead Blue Hens to Victory

On Sunday afternoon, Allison Coomey (Niagara ’02) and the University of Delaware secured the first win in program history just four games into the 2025-26 season. With 17 freshmen on the inaugural roster, it’s no surprise that a trio of first-years led the Blue Hens to the historic victory.
After a scoreless first period, Delaware fell behind by one early in the second against Holy Cross. The response came just a few minutes later when freshman forward Meera Smith (Victoria, British Columbia) buried her first collegiate goal to tie the game.
Midway through the second, the Blue Hens capitalized on a power play when freshman Katelynn Charlton (Brampton, Ontario) scored her third goal of the weekend. Charlton leads Delaware with four points this season (3g, 1a).
Delaware was outshot 50-11 but blocked 27 shots to support its freshman netminder, who kept the game close. Goaltender Charlotte Payne (Oakville, Ontario) made a career-high 49 saves, including 13 in the first period to keep the game scoreless. She faced 20 shots in the third, stopping six in the final two minutes as Holy Cross pressed with an extra attacker.
Three additional freshmen recorded assists in the win: Lexie Lonask (Chandler, Ariz.), Emma MacIntyre (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and Bailey Gray (Plymouth, Minn.).
Delaware returns to the ice next weekend to continue its season-opening 10-game homestand with its first Atlantic Hockey America series. The Blue Hens will host No. 6 Penn State on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fred Rust Ice Arena

Win-nipiac:
The No. 8 ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats are off to a 4-0 start after a home-and-home weekend sweep of Providence. Despite falling behind early on Friday night on the road, junior forward Alex Law (Whitby, Ontario) led the Bobcats’ 5-2 victory with her first career hattrick for a four-point night (3g, 1a).
On Saturday, the Bobcats returned home to finish the series 5-0 with four different goal scorers and eight different players recording an assist. Sophomore forward Aynsley D’Ottavio (Rosedale, British Columbia) and freshman forward Ruby Rauk (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored their first collegiate goals, with D’Ottavio going back-to-back in the second and third periods.
Sophomore netminder Felicia Frank (Falköping, Sweden) has backstopped the Bobcats four-straight wins and secured her fifth career shutout on Saturday saving all 19 shots.
The No. 8 Bobcats are set for a road trip to upstate New York to take on the Syracuse Orange.
UConn’s Mackenzie’s Milestone:
The No. 12 UConn Huskies edged out No. 9 Clarkson 3-2 at Cheel Arena on Saturday. The win marked a milestone for coach Chris MacKenzie (Niagara ’00), who now boasts 200 career victories.
Graduate goalie Tia Chan (Hamilton, Ontario) turned in a 37-save performance to anchor the Huskies. Senior forward Brooke Campbell (Essex, Ontario) netted the game-winner midway through the second period, while UConn’s penalty kill went a perfect 4-for-4.
Multiple Mavs:
The Minnesota State Mavericks improved to 4-0-0 with a sweep of Lindenwood, with eight different players recording points in both games as the team capped its first home series of the season.
In Friday night’s home opener, the Mavericks blanked the Lions 4-0. Junior goaltender Hailey Hansen (Blaine, Minn.) earned her third win and second shutout of the season. Sophomore forward Ayla Puppe (Northfield, Minn.) scored twice, while forwards Zoe Lopez (Fr., Orono, Minn.) and Bella Shipley (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) also scored.
On Saturday, Lauren Goldsworthy (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) opened the scoring with a power-play goal. After Lindenwood tied the game in the second period, freshman forward Mercury Bischoff (Grand Rapids, Minn.) restored the lead just over 10 minutes later. The Lions drew even early in the third, but Makayla Moran (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn.) scored the game-winner less than two minutes later, her first of the season.
Around the Block:
Through six games, Mercyhurst has already racked up a league-high 93 blocked shots, and senior defenseman Makayla Javier (Abingdon, Md.) has been a big reason why. She leads both the Lakers and the nation with 20 blocks this season. Last year, Javier ranked 12th nationally with 79 blocks, bringing her career total to 223.
Notebook Quotebook:
“Big bounce back today from our team. They hit the gas right off the first puck drop. Our special teams were the difference. The penalty kill was outstanding all weekend, and we capitalized on the power play to get the win. Emma was solid and provided great comfort for us while we played with a one-goal lead.”
–St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells (’92) on the Saints’ response to a split weekend series against Mercyhurst with a 3-0 win on Saturday.
PWHL Note of the Week:
The PWHL saw a flurry of signings this week, highlighted by three former NCAA standouts. The New York Sirens added 2025 fourth-round pick Dayle Ross (St. Cloud State ‘25) on a one-year deal.
The Minnesota Frost locked in former Wisconsin captain Britta Curl-Salemme (’24) for two more years. Last season, she tied for third in PWHL rookie scoring while helping Minnesota hoist the Walter Cup.
Vancouver also made a splash, signing North Dakota alum Michelle Karvinen (’14) to a one-year deal. Karvinen racked up 131 points (56 goals, 75 assists) in just three seasons with the Fighting Hawks.
