Women’s Notes: Penn State Stays Perfect
Janecke Leads Nittany Lions to Historic Start

For the first time in program history, No. 6 Penn State has opened the season 10-0-0 – the first team in the country to hit double-digit wins (quickly followed by the Wisconsin Badgers).
The Nittany Lions are led by senior captain Tessa Janecke (F, Orangeville, Ill.), who continues to prove she’s one of the top two-way players in the game. Janecke sits tied for seventh nationally in scoring with seven goals and seven assists through 10 games and is riding an eight-game point streak. She’s a plus-9 on the season and ranks eighth in the country in faceoff percentage (66%) among players with 140 or more draws.
Coming into the season, Janecke ranked tied for fifth in the nation among active players in career goals, assists and points — plus top five in power-play and shorthanded goals. She’s leading the charge as Pegula Ice Arena gets ready to host the 2026 Women’s Frozen Four.
Freshman forward Danica Maynard (Lake Country, British Columbia) has found her footing early in her career, collecting 14 points (3g, 11a) to rank second nationally among rookies. The Nittany Lions’ offense has looked to depth, with five forwards already in double digits in points.
Freshman Matilde Fantin (Como, Italy) has 12 points, while sophomore Grace Outwater (Picton, Ontario) and senior Maddy Christian (Elk River, Minn.) each have 11.
Between the pipes, senior goaltender Katie DeSa (Pawcatuck, Conn.) has been unwavering – boasting an 8-0-0 record with three shutouts, a 1.00 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage. Her 16 career shutouts put her within striking distance of Josie Bothun’s (2020–24) program record of 20.
The Nittany Lions hit the road next to face conference foe Robert Morris.

Sister-Sister:
A pair of sisters, the Schooleys, faced off against each other last weekend. Robert Morris junior defender Katilyn Schooley (Moon Township, Pa.) and Delaware freshman defender Taylor Schooley (Moon Township, Pa.) faced each other for the first time in their college careers but certainly won’t be the last as AHA foes. Kaitlyn earned AHA defender of the week honors following a three-point (3a) weekend.
At Minnesota State, sisters Kianna and Kaydence Roeske (Paynesville, Minn.) are back together for the first time since high school — one holding down the blue line, the other the crease. The Mavericks’ family duo is making this season a special one in Mankato.
“We come from a crazy hockey family, and it’s so cool to be able to play with Kaydence in high school and play with her now,” said Kianna. “It’s been a dream of ours to play together at a higher level, and it makes it easier on our parents to wear strictly purple and gold every weekend.” (source: Minnesota State Athletics)
Brown Takes Down Qpac’s Streak:
The Brown Bears defeated No. 7 Quinnipiac Bobcats, handing them their first loss of the season with a 1-0 shutout. Senior forward India McDadi (Mississauga, Ontario) buried her first goal of the season and sixth-career game winner for the Bears. Junior goalie Rory Edwards (Schomberg, Ontario) stopped all 33 shots, including 16 in the third period, for her fourth career shutout.
Sarah Ma(d)ness:
Clarkson freshman forward Sara Manness (Winnipeg, Manitoba) leads all freshmen in scoring with 15 points (3g, 12a). She’s notched a point in every game, putting her on an eight-game point streak to start her college campaign. The freshman also has one game winning goal and is plus-10 on the season.
Notebook Quotebook:
“We played the way we want to play, we were tough, we were fast, we kept it simple, and we made it hard on Colgate. That’s always a goal of ours, to be tough to play against, and I thought we did that from start to finish. It wasn’t always pretty but that’s hockey.”
