Minnesota State pulled off a feat it hadn’t accomplished since the 2006-07 season, completing a sweep of Minnesota improving its overall record this season to 8-7-1. The No. 2 Gophers still hold a leading edge in the all-time series at 114-8-3, but the Mavericks have now taken three of the last four meetings against their WCHA rival.

The home-and-home series opened Friday at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis and wrapped up Saturday at Mayo Clinic HSEC in Mankato.

Freshman forward Mercury Bischoff (Cohasset, Minn.) led the Mavericks with a breakout weekend, doubling her season point total to 12. She recorded six points (4 goals, 2 assists), including Friday’s game-winner and a hat trick on Saturday. Ten different Mavericks registered points in the series, all of them Minnesota natives.

“It was great to get scoring from a couple of different lines,” said head coach Shari Dickerman (’04). “I’m proud of the effort of our whole group.” (source: Minnesota State Athletics)

Additional goal scorers included junior forward Ava Guillemette (Prior Lake, Minn.), senior defenseman Kianna Roeske (Paynesville, Minn.) and senior forward Whitney Tuttle (Rosemount, Minn.). Junior forward Kamryn Van Batavia (Luverne, Minn.) added four assists and has matched her point total from last season with 11 (4 goals, 7 assists).

Between the pipes, junior goaltender Hailey Hansen (Blaine, Minn.) stopped 66 shots over the two games, including 39 on Friday, for a .971 save percentage.

The Mavericks host non-conference opponent Dartmouth this weekend at home.

Another Union Milestone:

The Union Garnet Chargers recorded another program milestone last weekend with a 4-3 overtime upset of No. 4/5 Cornell, marking the program’s first win against a top-five opponent.

Junior forward Maddie Leaney (Maple Ridge, British Columbia) recorded a hat trick, including the game-winner 2:04 into overtime, becoming the first player in Union’s Division I era with multiple hat tricks.

Junior goaltender Monja Wagner (Romanshorn, Switzerland) made 43 saves to backstop the Garnet Chargers to the victory.

Showing Her Stripes:

Princeton sophomore goaltender Uma Corniea (Edina, Minn.) made a career-high 40 saves on Saturday in the Tigers’ 2-0 win over No. 7 Quinnipiac to complete the weekend sweep.

Corniea earned her second shutout of the season, adding to her first blanking of top-ranked Clarkson earlier this month.

Century Scouting:

There are currently 14 active players with more than 100 career points, led by Minnesota senior forward Abbey Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill.) and Wisconsin senior forward Kristen Simms (Plymouth, Mich.), who each have surpassed 200. Keep an eye on potential future members of the Century Club:

  • Brooklyn Schneiderhan, Saint Anselm – 99 points (54G, 45A)
  • Carina DiAntonio, Yale – 95 points (45G, 50A)
  • Emma Pais, Colgate – 94 points (50G, 44A)
  • Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State – 92 points (47G, 45A)
  • Sydney Morrow, Minnesota – 92 points (32G, 60A)

“Shooooooot”:

Every hockey player has heard the dreaded “shoot!” echo from the stands. While often a misguided chant, sometimes you just have to put the puck on net and see what happens. Over the weekend, four players finished with a 100% shooting percentage.

  • Jaidan Fahrny, RIT– 2G, 2SOG
  • Brynne West, Quinnipiac – 2G, 2 SOG
  • Olivia Maffeo, Boston College – 1G, 1SOG
  • Kianna Roeskse, Minnesota State– 1G, 1SOG

Add a Little Nutmeg:

UConn will host the annual battle for Connecticut later this month, with four of the state’s five Division I programs set to compete for the Nutmeg Classic: UConn, Quinnipiac, Yale and Sacred Heart.

Yale is the defending champion after edging Quinnipiac in a shootout to win the 2024 Nutmeg Classic.

This year’s tournament opens Nov. 28 with UConn facing Quinnipiac at 3 p.m., followed by Sacred Heart vs. Yale at 6:30 p.m. The winners advance to the championship game Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m., while the remaining teams will play for third place at 3 p.m.

All games will stream on ESPN+.

Notebook Quotebook:

“A strong team weekend. It is never easy to sweep in our league. We were proud of the way our team came together and found a way to get the win this afternoon.”

— Colgate head coach Stefan Decosse (SUNY Geneseo, ’12) praised his team’s effort over the weekend, highlighted by an ECAC sweep with wins over RPI on Friday and Union on Saturday.

PWHL Note of the Week:

In the inaugural matchup of expansion teams, the Vancouver Goldeneyes won their home debut, defeating the Seattle Torrent 4-3 in overtime before a sold-out crowd of 14,958. Former St. Lawrence standout Julia Gosling (’24) scored the franchise’s first goal, while Minnesota alum Abby Boreen (’23) netted the OT winner.

Toronto rookie Kiara Zanon (Ohio State ’25), the 16th overall pick, recorded her first professional point with the game-winning goal to lift the Sceptres past the Minnesota Frost. Zanon became the first PWHL rookie since Minnesota’s Grace Zumwinkle on Jan. 3, 2024, to score a game-winning goal in her debut. Reflecting on the milestone, Zanon said, “Any goal feels great, any time you can do it with this team, I think it’s going to be pretty special.”
