Surrounded by more than 100 alumnae the DogHouse student section and 115 years of hockey history, the No. 6 Northeastern Huskies secured a sweep in their final game at Matthews Arena.

Matthews Arena opened in 1910 as Boston Arena and has served as a living piece of hockey history, from hosting the Boston Bruins’ first home ice in the 1920s to the original home court of the Boston Celtics and early games of the New England Whalers (now the Carolina Hurricanes).

Northeastern purchased the arena in 1979, and women’s hockey began the following year — marking 45 years of Huskies, hockey and history. The weekend matchup couldn’t have been more meaningful, closing out the building with a rivalry series against Boston College.

On Friday, junior forward Allie Lalonde (Irvine, Calif.) recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Huskies in Game 1. The Huskies outshot the Eagles 40-18 with sophomore goalie Lisa Jönsson (Stockholm, Sweden) recording 17 saves.

On Saturday, the Eagles came out ready to spoil the farewell, taking two leads throughout the game, but Northeastern answered each time. Senior captain Lily Shannon (Andover, Mass.) scored the eventual game-winner with just over two minutes remaining in regulation. Freshman forward Stryker Zablocki (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) posted a three-point night with a goal and two assists. Jönsson held the net game two making 28 saves. See the full highlights of the final game here.

With a new arena in the Huskies’ future, Princeton’s Hobey Baker Rink (1923) now stands as the oldest rink in women’s college hockey.
