Men’s Notes: Wickström Stumer Turns Opportunity into History

Collegians Stand Out at World Juniors, Spengler Cup

Men’s Notes: Wickström Stumer Turns Opportunity into History

Prior to last weekend, Canisius sophomore G Petter Wickström Stumer (Stockholm, Sweden) had made one start this season, a 4-2 win over RIT on Dec. 6.

That was his only appearance until coming off the bench in the third period of Friday’s 5-2 loss at Lindenwood. The relief outing was enough to earn Wickström Stumer the starting assignment in Saturday’s rematch with the Lions, and he came through with a performance for the ages.

Wickström Stumer stopped an incredible 72 shots in the Golden Griffins’ 4-3 regulation victory, setting school and Atlantic Hockey America single-game records.

Thirty-two of his saves came during the third period when Lindenwood held a 34-6 advantage in shots on goal.

“Petter’s performance was nothing short of spectacular,” Canisius head coach Trevor Large (Ferris State ‘04) told College Hockey Inc. “The effort required to win that game was extremely high.”

According to the NCAA record book, it was the 10th-best single-game saves total in Division I men’s history and the most in a regular-season game in 54 years:

Most Saves, NCAA Men’s Reg. Season Game
Svs Player, School Opponent Date
78 Dick Greenlaw, RPI Boston U. Dec. 14, 1965
77 Bill Halbrehder, Minn. Duluth Michigan Dec. 19, 1964
74 Jack Noblet, Michigan Tech North Dakota Jan. 18, 1948
73 Ed Schiller, Michigan State Denver Feb. 6, 1954
72 Petter Wickström Stumer, Canisius Lindenwood Jan. 3, 2026
72 Ed Mio, Colorado College Wisconsin Nov. 17, 1972
72 Geoff McMullen, Colgate Cornell Jan. 26, 1971

“I give a ton of credit to the players and staff at Lindenwood. They controlled the game,” Large continued. “Petter was the reason we won. I am extremely proud of him, and he deserves the recognition after a 72-save performance.”

Needless to say, Wickström Stumer was named AHA Goaltender of the Week on Tuesday.

Kai of the Tiger:

Princeton enters the week on a five-game winning streak – all during ECAC Hockey play – that is the school’s longest since a seven-gamer in 2017-18.

A big catalyst has been the play of junior F Kai Daniells (Whistler, British Columbia) and linemates Jake Manfre (So., Smithtown, N.Y.) and David Jacobs (Sr., Needham, Mass.). Over the Tigers’ last five games, that trio has racked up 13 goals and 27 points while combining for a plus-30 rating.

In 14 games overall this season, Daniells leads the NCAA in points per game at 1.64, a number that climbs to 1.88 during conference play.

World Junior Wrap:

A trio of collegians helped lead Sweden to a gold medal at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship: Colorado College F Wilson Björck (Fr., Stockholm, Sweden), Boston University D Sascha Boumedienne (So., Stockholm, Sweden), and Michigan State F Eric Nilson (Fr., Balsta, Sweden).

Boumedienne tallied the game-winning goal in Monday’s 4-2 win over Czechia in the gold medal game.

UMass freshman F Václav Nestrašil (Prague, Czechia) earned a silver medal playing for Czechia.

Michigan sophomore F Michael Hage (Mississauga, Ontario) was named Canada’s MVP and earned one of three forward spots on the media all-star team. He led the tournament with 15 points (two goals, 13 assists) in seven games.

Spengler Sensations:

The United States Collegiate Selects – a select team of NCAA all-stars – advanced all the way to the championship game of the 2025 Spengler Cup, where it fell to host HC Davos 6-3 last Wednesday.

It was a record 17th Spengler title for HC Davos, while the USCS represented the first-ever college all-star squad to compete in the prestigious event.

Penn State junior F Aiden Fink (Calgary, Alberta) was named to the all-tournament team after racking up four goals and eight points in four games.

Ahead by a Century:

College hockey’s 100-point club could grow by multiple players this weekend:

Career NCAA Points Leaders (active)
150 – T.J. Hughes, Michigan
122 – Jeremy Wilmer, Quinnipiac
114 – Lucas Wahlin, St. Thomas
110 – Cruz Lucius, Arizona State
105 – Bennett Schimek, Arizona State
98 – Aiden Fink, Penn State
98 – Owen McLaughlin, Boston University
97 – Daniel Russell, Michigan State
95 – Chris Hedden, Air Force
94 – Davis Burnside, Ohio State

Additionally, St. Thomas senior F Lucas Wahlin (Woodbury, Minn.) is two goals away from joining Michigan’s T.J. Hughes (Sr., Hamilton, Ontario) as the nation’s only active players with 100 career points and 50 career goals.

SID Corner:

A double-tap effort this week from Princeton SID Chas Dorman, who noted that Princeton’s eight-game home winning streak to start the season is a Hobey Baker Rink record, covering 103 years of hockey in the Tigers’ venerable venue.

Dorman also noted that the No. 19/20 Tigers have cracked the national polls for the first time since Nov. 26, 2018.

Notebook Quotebook:

“I love [the GLI] playing for Tech. We have the best fans. I’m just enjoying my last year. I love my teammates and coaches. This is the best time of our lives, so I’m just enjoying it.”

— Michigan Tech senior F Stiven Sardarian (Saint Petersburg, Russia) following the Huskies’ Dec. 28 win over Miami in the Great Lakes Invitational semifinals (source: MichiganTechHuskies.com).

NHL Note of the Week:

With his assist on Tuesday, Winnipeg F Jonathan Toews (North Dakota, 2005-07) is just four points away from reaching 900 for his NHL career. He is bidding to become the 19th former college hockey player and the first North Dakota alumni to hit that milestone.

Toews and the Jets return to action tonight at home against Edmonton.

Fries at the Bottom of the Bag:

Penn State senior D Jared Crespo (Easthampton Township, N.J.) scored a hat trick in Sunday’s 7-3 win over RIT. Crespo, who had eight career goals in his previous 121 college games, joined Denver’s Eric Pohlkamp (Oct. 11 vs. Bentley) as the nation’s only rearguards this season with a hat trick … Arizona State senior D Tucker Ness (Plymouth, Minn.), playing in his 69th NCAA game, scored his first career goal in a Dec. 27 win at Dartmouth … Mercyhurst blocked an NCAA season-high 34 shots in Saturday’s loss at North Dakota … Arizona State (Desert Hockey Classic), Michigan State (Great Lakes Invitational), St. Cloud State (Cactus Cup) and Western Michigan (Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off) all won holiday college hockey tournaments.
