The Holy Cross women’s hockey team delivered one of the most memorable weekends in program history, earning a number of firsts against conference opponent Providence. The Crusaders opened the series Friday night with a hard-fought 2-1 victory, marking the program’s first-ever win over the Friars in more than 20 matchups.

On Friday, junior F Emily Crovo (Melrose, Mass.) led the charge, scoring both Holy Cross goals. Crovo opened the scoring late in the first period and followed with a second tally early in the second. Senior goaltender Brooke Loranger (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario) made 20 saves and withstood Providence’s late push, making 11 in the final frame.

The Crusaders carried that energy into Saturday’s rematch and shut out Providence 3-0 for their first-ever shutout against the Friars. Holy Cross had depth in both scoring and between the pipes as senior netminder Abby Hornung (Ashland, Mass.) stopped all 35 shots she faced to earn her third shutout of the season and seventh of her career. Goals came from three different forwards including junior F Reghan Chadwick (Port Hope, Ontario), senior F Alexia Moreau (Louisville, Quebec), and senior F Charlotte Sonntag (Sun Valley, Idaho). The win also marked the program’s first victory at Schneider Arena, the Crusaders’ first program sweep of Providence and their first season with double-digit Hockey East wins.

“This year we’ve been lucky to have a lot of firsts, but any time you can win on the road, it’s always a good thing. And when it’s our first one in this building, that’s even better,” said head coach Katie Lachapelle on her team’s win (source: Holy Cross Women’s Hockey).

Holy Cross currently sits third in the Hockey East standings with seven games remaining in the regular season.

The sweep marks an impressive 8-2-0 record in their last 10 games by the Crusaders, which put them in the national polls for the first time in program history last week. After the sweep of Providence, Holy Cross sits No. 13/14 in the country as they face No. 6 Northeastern.

Kampersal Cracks 500:

Penn State head coach Jeff Kampersal reached a historic milestone Friday night, earning his 500th career win with a 5-0 shutout of Delaware at Pegula Ice Arena. The victory made Kampersal just the fifth head coach in Division I women’s ice hockey history to reach 500 wins.

Goaltender Maddy Campbell (Courtice, Ontario) anchored the crease for Kampersal’s historic win and also etched her name into the record book, recording her fourth shutout of the season – the most by a freshman goaltender in Penn State history.

Penn State will take the game outdoors this weekend, playing in the first-ever hockey game at West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions face Robert Morris on Friday, Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. ET.

(Can’t) Stop the Manness:

Clarkson freshman twin sisters Kate and Sara Manness (Winnipeg, Manitoba) are both on 10-game point streaks which began Dec. 6, 2025. Sara has 15 goals and eight assists, while Kate has two goals and 16 assists.

During the duo’s 10-game point streak, the Clarkson Golden Knights are 8-1-1.

NEWHA Netminders:

Saint Michael’s senior Annika Lavender (Plymouth, Minnesota) became the first goalie in NEWHA history to reach 3,000 career saves, making 58 stops in a 2–1 loss at Post University. Lavender ended the night with 3,026 saves and broke the school record for career minutes by a goalie.

Shortly after Lavender’s milestone, another NEWHA goalie joined the ranks. On Saturday, Franklin Pierce senior Jill Hertl of Highland Park, Illinois, made 56 saves in the Ravens’ tie against Assumption to reach 3,000 career saves.

Lavender and Hertl sit third and fourth in career saves from 2020 through today and are on pace to catch second-place Union’s Sophie Matsoukas (2021–25). In 2025, Syracuse goaltender Allie Kelley (2020–25) broke the NCAA career saves record, finishing her career with more than 4,500 saves.

Minnesota Milestones:

No. 3 Minnesota completed the sweep with a 5-1 win over St. Cloud State on Saturday. The win not only marked head coach Brad Frost’s (Bethel ’96) 550th career victory but also saw graduate forward Abbey Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill.) tie the program career goals record. Murphy matched former Gopher forward and current Ohio State head coach Nadine Muzerall (1997–01) with 139 career goals.

Murphy leads the nation this season with 61 points (36 goals, 25 assists) and tops active career points with 256 (139 goals, 117 assists).

Senior forward Josefin Bouveng (Vassunda, Sweden) extended her point streak to 25 games, the longest in the nation since Northeastern’s Alina Mueller (’23) recorded points in 22 straight from Oct. 6, 2018, to Jan. 19, 2019.

Notebook Quotebook:

“I am so excited to play in the Yanmar Arena one last time. It’s a special event and special experience that I’m very grateful to be a part of. I’m excited for my Mankato team to get to experience a little bit of my home town and home ice. It will be nice to have familiar faces in the crowd and having great energy in the rink. I’m excited to have family and friends at the game because they can’t make the other games! With my grandparents getting older and not being able to travel far it will be nice for them to experience one of my college games.”

— Minnesota State freshman forward Mercury Bischoff (Cohasset, Minn.) said earlier this season she is excited to return home for the matchup against Bemidji State. Although the Mavericks will be the away team, there will be tons of Mavs fans as Bischoff spent four years on the Grand Rapids Greenway varsity hockey team and won the 2025 Ms. Hockey Award, given to the top senior in the state (source: Herald Review).
