Men’s Notes: Black, Wyttenbach Resolute in New Year
Duo Top Scoring Charts Since Calendar Turned to 2026

At first glance, Bentley winger Jake Black (Sr., Pomfret, Conn.) and Quinnipiac winger Ethan Wyttenbach (Fr., Roslyn, N.Y.) could not profile more differently.
One is an undrafted senior who needed four years to fully unlock his offensive game in the NCAA, while the other is a freshman sensation and NHL Draft pick who recently took over the national scoring lead.
What Black and Wyttenbach do have in common, however, is an unmatched scoring pace since the calendar flipped from 2025 to 2026.
Since January 1, no one in the nation has topped the 22 points they’ve each produced, and no one has tallied more goals:
NCAA Point Leaders Since Jan. 1
22 – Jake Black, Bentley
22 – Ethan Wyttenbach, Quinnipiac
19 – Antonin Verreault, Quinnipiac
17 – Jonathan Castagna, Cornell
16 – Porter Martone, Michigan State
16 – Daniel Russell, Michigan State
NCAA Goals Leaders Since Jan. 1
11 – Jake Black, Bentley
10 – Ethan Wyttenbach, Quinnipiac
9 – Dylan James, North Dakota
9 – Nathan Pilling, St. Thomas
8 – Seven players tied
Incredibly, Black’s 22 points during that 13-game stretch match his career total from his previous 71 games. After failing to top seven points in any of his first three NCAA seasons, Black leads the Atlantic Hockey America scoring race in 2025-26, amassing 31 points in 29 games.
Wyttenbach’s surge, meanwhile, has vaulted him to the top of the national scoring race, where his 47 points give him a rather comfortable six-point lead on Minnesota Duluth’s Max Plante (So., Hermantown, Minn.).
That production is even more impressive when you consider Wyttenbach, a Calgary Flames fifth-rounder in 2025, was originally slated to return to the USHL for one more year of junior hockey seasoning. Yet here he is, on a 10-game scoring streak with 11 points in his last four outings.
Black and Wyttenbach have helped propel their programs to great team success this year: Bentley sits atop the Atlantic Hockey standings and is eyeing its first AHA regular-season title in program history, while QU is chasing an incredible sixth straight Cleary Cup as ECAC Hockey champs.
While they traveled disparate paths to arrive at this point, the commonalities are clear: Black and Wyttenbach are the top point getters on two of the nation’s top teams, and they’re only getting better as the stakes rise.

BC Brings Back Beanpot:
Boston College claimed its first Beanpot title since 2016 on Monday, defeating Boston University 6-2 in the championship game at TD Garden. It was the 300th all-time meeting between the two teams in the rivalry known as the Battle for Comm Ave.
Senior F Andrew Gasseau (Garden Grove, Calif.) and junior F Will Vote (Arlington, Mass.) each scored twice in the title game, while sophomore F James Hagens (Hauppauge, N.Y.) was named Beanpot MVP after racking up five points in two games.
Home is Where the Heart Is:
Alaska Anchorage returned to its former home, Sullivan Arena, for the first time in nearly six years last weekend and skated to a split with rival Alaska, the latest installment of their Governor’s Cup series.
Anchorage native and junior F Aiden Westin scored the overtime winner in Saturday’s stirring victory.
“To see an Anchorage kid score the overtime winner made it even more special,” UAA head coach Matt Shasby (UAA ’08) told the Anchorage Daily News. “Our players understand what it means to represent this city and this state, and moments like that show young players in Alaska that you can grow up here, play in front of your hometown fans, and make a huge impact at this level.”
The series drew 9,460 fans over the two games, attracting more than 4,500 each night.
Century Club:
Air Force senior D Chris Hedden (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Quinnipiac junior F Mason Marcellus (Greely, Ontario) became the latest college hockey players to reach 100 career NCAA points last weekend.
Marcellus set up a first-period goal in Saturday’s win over Yale for his 100th point, while Hedden reached the milestone with an assist that same night in a loss at Niagara. Hedden is the only active defenseman in NCAA Division I men’s hockey in the 100-point club.

SID Stuff:
According to Clarkson Assistant Athletic Director/Athletic Communications Josh Bartell, the 15 goals in Saturday’s 8-7 overtime win against Union tied for the most ever scored in a single game at Clarkson’s Cheel Arena.
The other game that featured a combined 15 goals at Cheel? That was also an 8-7 Clarkson win over Union back in November 1993.
Bartell, himself a Golden Knight defenseman from 1992-96, played in that game and was penalized twice. One of his teammates was current Clarkson head coach Jean-François Houle (’96), who scored two goals that night.
Notebook Quotebook:
“I would run through a wall for Hauge. If he would tell me to run through a wall, I’d just ask him what speed I have to go.”
— Union freshman D Etienne Lessard (Blainville, Quebec) on his head coach Josh Hauge (source: College Hockey News).
NHL Note of the Week:
Calgary netminder Devin Cooley (Denver, 2017-20) leads the NHL in save percentage at the Olympic break with a sparkling .921 mark in 19 appearances.
Cooley signed a free-agent contract with Nashville in 2020 following three standout seasons at DU. He split the next three years between the AHL and ECHL before making his NHL debut with a six-game stint for San Jose in 2023-24.
Cooley then spent the entire 2024-25 campaign with Calgary’s AHL affiliate before breaking camp with the big club this season. In addition to his league-leading save percentage, Cooley ranks fourth in the NHL this season with a 2.27 goals against average.
