Minnesota Duluth’s Max Plante Claims 2026 Hobey Baker Award
Michigan State’s Trey Augustine Named Mike Richter Award Recipient

LAS VEGAS—Minnesota Duluth sophomore forward Max Plante has been named the 2026 recipient of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given annually to the best player in NCAA Division I men’s hockey.
The announcement was televised live Friday on NHL Network from the Park MGM on the eve of the NCAA Frozen Four championship game between Denver and Wisconsin.
Plante, who was also named a first-team All-American on Friday, played in 40 games this season and is tied for third in the national scoring race with 52 points. He led the NCHC in goals (25), points per game (1.30) and game-winning goals (six). The Hermantown, Minn., native became the seventh Bulldog to win the Hobey Baker Award and the first since defenseman Scott Perunovich in 2020.
The 2025-26 NCHC Player of the Year, Plante was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round (47th overall) of the 2024 NHL Draft.
Also on Friday, Michigan State junior goalie Trey Augustine won the Mike Richter Award as the nation’s top goaltender. A native of South Lyon, Mich., Augustine also garnered first-team All-America honors after going 24-9-1 with a 2.11 goals against average and .929 save percentage. He backstopped the Spartans to their second straight Big Ten Conference regular-season championship.
At the conclusion of Michigan State’s season, Augustine signed an entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings, who made him a second-round pick (41st overall) in 2023.
